ABOUT ME
I am Dr. Sadie Sheafe, Ph.D, LCSW. By almost any standard, I am a country girl. I grew up in an exceptionally rural area of southern Georgia. My parents are Edith Pearl Middleton and the late Emory J. Middleton Sr. I have eleven brothers and sisters.
I am married and have three children. Since childhood I always liked working with, and helping others. My family was not in the least surprised when I decided to go into a helping profession. I began as a Peer Counselor in College in 1979 and eventually became a social worker; and why not? After all, Jesus was a social worker and part time carpenter. I haven’t quite got the carpentry down yet! I am currently a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and am credited with being the second African American in the State of Virginia to receive a Doctorate in Sexology.
I am a Board Certified Clinical Sexologist, Diplomate of the American Board of Sexology and Licensed Clinical Social Worker; I received my Bachelors Degree in Sociology from Albany State University and my Masters Degree in Social Work from Norfolk State University where I also began the Doctorate Social Work program. I attended Post graduate studies focused in psycho-dynamic therapy and treatment at the Clinical Social Work Institute in Washington, DC and completed my Ph.D. in Clinical Sexology at the American Academy of Clinical Sexology in Florida, an internationally recognized leading institution in graduate level education in the field of sexology.
I have been working in the field of mental health and a practicing psychotherapy and sex therapist in a number of clinical setting; my passion as a therapist, educator, researcher, lecturer and speaker spans 24 years. Here in the U.S. and in Europe I have worked with thousands of men and women of all religions, races, creeds and socioeconomic backgrounds. Presently I am the primary provider for Military Sexual Trauma and the Director of Substance Abuse Treatment in Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences for one of the largest substance abuse programs in the Veterans Affairs Medical Center Network of Hospitals and also, an Adjunct Professor at Norfolk State University. Most recently, in my private practice I was the Clinical Director for Therapeutic Options, Legal Forensics & Training Consultants for the state of Virginia; counseling families recovering from the devastation of sexual abuse. My most challenging moments in this profession always transpire when I am assisting clients who feel worthless because of the abuse they suffered at the hands of others. These counseling sessions are the most challenging and, when a breakthrough and awareness occurs, the most fulfilling.
I am very proud of my continued involvement in advancing the field of Clinical Sexology. In my practice I assist individuals and couples of all backgrounds who are struggling with sexual issues, dysfunctions and other psychiatric diagnosis such as depression, ADD, PTSD and substance abuse. I offer private, affordable, telephone counseling sessions to help my clients solve concerns that are causing problems in their lives. I offer solid, down-to-earth guidance, feedback and support based on my 24 years of experience. My telephone counseling atmosphere is friendly, accommodating, non-judgmental, compassionate but direct. I only have one goal in therapy; to help my clients help themselves!
My work in psycho-education in treating Female Victims of Sexual Trauma became the subject matter of a book authored by Dr. Yvonne Burrell, The Positive Effects of Psycho-Educational Treatment on Female Victims of Sexual Trauma published in 2007. This book highlights the Psycho-educational treatment program designed by me to specifically treat female victims of sexual trauma.
Currently, I am authoring a work entitled, Breeder’s, The Invisible Chain, scheduled to be released in 2009.
It explains the dehumanizing societal dysfunctions surrounding the Black family which has developed into generational cultural norms. In addition, it explores the circumstances surrounding the methodical and systematic programming of Black male sexuality in America, from past to present.
and International Conferences on Substance Abuse and Military Sexual Trauma. I have presented for the Veterans Affairs National Conference for Military Sexual Trauma on Substance Abuse and Sexual Trauma and, most recently, in New York City, at The John Jay College of Criminal Justice International Conference in October 2007, “Brothers in Silence, Treatment Issues for Veteran Survivors of Military Trauma”.
